“Pumi” are handmade ceramic objects used for decoration, they’re very common in Grottaglie. They’re usually placed in pairs at both ends of the balcony. According to popular culture, the “pumo” serves an apotropaic function, it’s a sign of good omen used to drive evil away. Its shape recalls a stylized flower bud, while according others it recalls the Islamic mosque steeple.
